Description: The design on the bag is based on one of the skylights in the Shrine, which depicts the seal of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. The symbols in the seal are The Sacred Heart, a symbol of the Sisters’ special devotion; the Beaconing Star, which represents Mary, Star of the Sea; the Waves, which manifest
the Sea of Life, where their calling takes them; and the anchor and fish, sometimes represented in earlier versions of the seal as boats, which symbolize the Sisters’ world-wide missionary zeal extending across the oceans. The anchor was also an early symbol of Christianity during the period of Roman persecution.
